The title itself is enticing. Who wouldn’t want to be younger? And it’s written with the collaboration of a medical doctor board-certified in Internal Medecine, and in Gerontology. Even though the book was written for women, most health issues are gender-neutral and the points should also benefit men.
Aging. Who on earth doesn’t age? But the aging process can be managed by changing the way we live. ( I didn’t say changing the way we work, live, play … I still own some CSCO stocks :) ). I wrote “managed”, not “reversed”. And the title says next year, not next week; which means don’t expect a quick fix. The majority of the population in this country lives in idleness, isolation, obesity, and blames their problems on society. It’s time for revolution, to get smart, and take responsibility for our well-being.
In a nutshell, three things: Exercise, Nutrition, Commitment. Things we already know, but need to be constantly reminded.
- Exercise hard almost every day of your life (i.e. 6 days a week), including strength training and lift weights, 2-3 times a week. Do at least 45 minutes each day. Best if joining a gym or a class for motivation and support. Walking the dog, gardening are better than doing nothing, but don’t lie to yourself that you’re exercising hard, ‘coz u ain’t.
- Nutrition. Eat the way you know you should eat, but don’t. Quit eating junk foods. Eat less of everything. A glass or two of wine is good, but not more.
- Commitment. Be involved with other people, care about something. Have love and passion for people and causes and hobbies. Open your heart and arms.
